University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing Professor and Associate Dean for Access and Engagement Felesia Bowen, PhD, DNP, RN, PPCNP-BC, FADLN, FAANP, FAAN, is a recipient of the 2026 National Black Nurses Association Trailblazer Award. The award recognizes those who take risks and are leaders in their community, state and nation.
"I am deeply honored to receive the NBNA Trailblazer Award," Bowen said. "When NBNA President Dr. Sheldon Fields called to share the news and described my leadership as 'brave and bold,' I was both humbled and grateful. There are millions of nurses in this country and thousands of NBNA members whose contributions improve lives every day. To be recognized among such an accomplished group is truly meaningful. This award affirms the importance of courageous leadership, service to others, and creating opportunities that empower future generations of nurses to lead and make a lasting impact."
Bowen is a nationally certified pediatric nurse practitioner and has distinguished herself as a leader in the areas of pediatric asthma, health disparities and health equity. She has a strong academic nursing background with expertise in teaching, service and research. Bowen is Immediate Past President of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. Bowen also has served on the Editorial Advisory Board for the Journal of Pediatric Health Care, the official journal of NAPNAP.
Bowen is the recipient of several grant awards, including a five-year Health Resources and Services Administration grant to conduct an upstream, community-level intervention to reduce childhood obesity and its associated poor health outcomes in the Birmingham area. Her expertise in pediatric health care has been recognized at the municipal, state and national levels, including two terms of service as a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine Forum for Children's Well-Being.
"While an award may be presented to an individual, no one achieves success alone," she said. "Behind every leader is a community of mentors, colleagues, friends, and supporters who help shape their journey. I am deeply grateful for the mentors and leaders at the UAB School of Nursing, from whom I learn something every day. They have challenged me to grow, supported me through new opportunities, and generously shared their wisdom and expertise."
Bowen received the award at the 54th Annual NBNA Institute and Conference in St. Louis.
