University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing Professor Peng Li, PhD, is one of 12 recipients of the 2026 President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Since 1990, this annual award has recognized full-time faculty members across the university who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in teaching. Individuals can be nominated by members of the student body, faculty or alumni.
In nomination letters, Li is noted for his innovative ability to translate complex learning material into accessible knowledge, as well as his undying commitment to his craft. “Dr. Li embodies the qualities of an outstanding educator,” one nominator said. “He not only imparts knowledge, but also fosters curiosity, critical thinking and professional growth. His commitment to student success, innovative teaching strategies and dedication to mentorship make him an ideal candidate for this honor.” Another nominator says that Li’s service and scholarship “set an outstanding example,” mentioning his 2026 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research Collaboration and his multiple Dean’s Scholar Awards.
Collaboration and mentorship are at the heart of Li’s educational mission, as he has co-authored more than 31 peer-reviewed publications with students and trainees and has played an integral role in securing four extramural student awards.
“I am deeply honored and grateful to receive the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching,” Li said. “Teaching is one of the most meaningful aspects of my academic career, and it is especially rewarding to be recognized for work that directly impacts students’ development as future nurse scientists, educators and healthcare leaders.”
For Li, the award is significant, as it “affirms the importance of [his] work and motivates [him] to continue finding innovative ways to support student learning and success.”
Li has been teaching at the School since 2018. He teaches statistics and quantitative research methods in the PhD program and mentors doctoral students in the application of advanced statistical techniques to nursing and health research. His scholarly work focuses on study design, biostatistics, data science, and quantitative methodologies that support rigorous research and evidence-based healthcare. Through his teaching, mentoring, and research, Li is committed to preparing the next generation of nurse scientists and advancing healthcare knowledge through innovative analytical approaches.
“This award not only reflects my efforts,” he said, “but also the engagement and dedication of my students and the support of my colleagues at the School.”
