While some people choose one challenging path, University of Alabama at Birmingham Bachelor of Science in Nursing student Mia Martin balances two—the demands of Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps with the rigors of nursing school. From early morning and weekend physical training with UAB's Army ROTC to nursing classes, clinicals and studying, Martin says it has been challenging at times.
"There have been plenty of days fueled by very little sleep," Martin said. "But when you're pursuing two things you're genuinely passionate about, it doesn't feel like a burden. It feels rewarding. ROTC and nursing have pushed me to become more disciplined, resilient and organized than I ever thought possible. Looking back, I wouldn't trade the experience for anything."
Growing up in Cumming, Ga., Martin knew she wanted a career that challenged her both physically and mentally. After graduating from high school, she took a gap year to attend Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training, where she trained as an Army combat medic. That experience not only strengthened her passion for military service but also inspired her to combine it with a career in healthcare.
"I've always loved healthcare and the fast-paced environment that it provides. I enjoy being on my feet, constantly learning and challenging myself," Martin said. "The human body is so intricate, and I love diving deep into understanding how everything works. On top of that, I love helping people, and nursing gives you the opportunity to make a real difference in someone's life every single day."
When it came time to choose a nursing program, UAB stood out as the clear choice. The School's BSN Program is ranked No. 13 nationally and No. 1 in Alabama by U.S. News & World Report.
"I chose UAB because it's one of the best nursing schools in the nation," Martin said. "I knew I'd receive an incredible education while learning in one of the country's top academic medical centers. Plus, Birmingham has such a fun and lively atmosphere, so it really felt like the perfect fit."
Martin also was selected for the Dean's Nursing Scholars Program, designed for academically talented high school seniors who are strongly considering a career in nursing and receive priority admission to the UAB School of Nursing.
"Being a Dean's Nursing Scholar gave me the opportunity to connect with the School of Nursing before officially beginning my nursing education," Martin said. "The early acceptance and support helped make the transition into nursing school smoother and gave me confidence as I started this next chapter of my journey."
Martin encourages future nursing students not to shy away from pursuing ROTC or other extracurricular opportunities alongside their passion for nursing.
"You are so much stronger than you think you are. Work hard, stay organized, ask for help when you need it and don't forget to enjoy the journey. Give yourself grace, trust the process, and remember—you've got this," Martin said. "I'm incredibly grateful to UAB and Army ROTC for shaping me into the person I am today. They've given me lifelong friendships, amazing mentors, and experiences I'll carry with me for the rest of my life."
After graduating in August, Martin plans to commission as an active-duty Army nurse. One day, she hopes to earn her doctorate and eventually become an instructor.
"I really can't imagine my future without wearing my Army uniform and my tight military bun," Martin said. "I know I want to mentor and develop the next generation, just like so many incredible mentors have done for me."
