- As a result of its 2011 study, Gartner Consulting recommended that UAB combine and utilize 2 existing UAB card systems (BlackBoard Transact and Honeywell Prowatch), sharing a single card type to provide access to all card-based services currently offered on campus.
- In addition to serving as an identification card, the UAB ONE Cardwill provide access to the following resources:
- Parking
- Physical Security (doors, elevators, etc.)
- Declining balance retail transactions (on-campus dining/vending and selected off-campus locations)
- Pay-for-print/copy services
- Sterne Library & Lister Hill Library access and services
- Campus Recreation Center access

- Improve student, staff and faculty experience with card-based services at UAB
- Reduce the number of cards required for physical and service access
- Increase the functionality and usability of card-based services
- Improve customer support and self-service features of UAB card-based services
- Strengthen UAB’s security position
- Link UAB cards to a robust enterprise identity management system
- Harmonize card access lifecycle processes
- Improve physical access control using enterprise card access systems
- Enable future enhancements such as Smart Card-based security features
- Improve the administrative efficiency of UAB card services
- Reduce Total Cost of Ownership for physical and logical card-based security
- Reduce the marginal costs of expanding the scope of card-based services
