Academics

Since awarding its first Doctor of Optometry degree in 1973, the UAB School of Optometry has grown to include graduate degrees in Vision Science and three dual degree programs: OD/MBA, OD/MPH and OD/MS. The UAB School of Optometry also offers eight affiliated residency programs for additional training in optometry with 16 highly-competitive spots.

The four-year professional optometry program prepares students to be the nation’s leaders in providing comprehensive, evidence-based eye care. Students can also combine their degree with an additional degree that will allow them to better understand the ever-advancing field of eye care.

The Vision Science Graduate Program provides comprehensive training in vision science through a master’s and doctoral degree. Students in the program are part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment and guided by faculty with an array of expertise.

Advanced clinical education in specialty areas of optometry is offered through three in-house and five affiliated residency programs—all of which are accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education of the American Optometric Association.
