Toby W. Tripp, Andrew B. Crouse and Carin Mayo are the first-quarter 2023 honorees of the UAB Shared Values in Action Program, which honors those whose work exemplifies and embodies Forging the Future’s shared values. Nominations for second-quarter 2023 honorees are open through May 24.

Employees seeking to prioritize well-being and mitigate anxiety can try journaling with the UAB Journaling Club, a new group launching in April from UAB Learning and Development.

Christopher L. Shook, Ph.D., who will begin July 1, brings more than 25 years of academic leadership experience to the role; he has served as dean of the Gordon Ford College of Business at Western Kentucky University since 2019.

UAB continues to implement its Campus Master Plan through new facilities and renovations to enhance instruction, research, technology and student life. More than 300 employees with 20 or more years of service will be honored during the annual Service Awards Program reception 2 p.m. April 11 in the Hilton Birmingham at UAB. Vithal K. Ghanta, Jerry G. Spenney, Joseph G. Van Matre and Richard J. Whitley will be honored for 50 years of service to UAB, and George M. Munchus III, Gregory E. Pence, Donna J. Slovenksy and Michael V. Yester will be honored for 45.

May will begin work full time at UAB Nov. 1 leading human resource units responsible for ensuring a positive employee experience at each point along the employee continuum.

UAB and UAB Medicine employees will be able to keep and roll over any unused personal holidays though June 2022 and get an extra day to celebrate Juneteenth. 

This year, the university recognizes 50 years of service by Jeanne Hutchison, Ph.D., and Ferdinand Urthaler, M.D., and 45 years of service by Robert Kim M.D., and Joseph Lovetto. In addition, 294 employees with 20 or more years and 904 with five, 10 and 15 years will honored for their longevity.

More than 280 employees with 20 or more years of service will be honored during the annual Service Awards Program luncheon noon March 6 in the Hill Student Center third floor ballroom. John F. Kearney, Ph.D., will be honored for 45 years of service to UAB, while Loy O. Vaughan, Ph.D., will be honored for 50.
