UAB Provost Eli Capilouto and five other community leaders have been chosen as “Men of Substance and Style” by Birmingham Magazine and will be honored Sept. 28 at a reception hosted by Saks Fifth Avenue at is Birmingham-area Summit location. All proceeds for the event will benefit prostate cancer research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The event was created in 2003 to recognize men whose personal style and commitment to the community is inspirational. Sponsors are Saks Fifth Avenue, Birmingham Magazine and Hart, Schaffner & Marx. Other recipients of the honor are Neal Berte, chancellor of Birmingham-Southern College; Leighton “Foots” Parnell, commercial mortgage banker and president of Byars and Co., Inc.; Scott Strand, owner of the 280 Trak Shak; Stanley Virciglio, owner of Piggly Wiggly grocery stores in Homewood and Crestline; and Lemarse Washington, executive director of the National Coalition of Community and Justice.

Capilouto has served in leadership roles on the boards of the YMCA, Red Cross, Ronald McDonald House Board and Temple Emanu-El and is a member of the Mountain Brook Board of Education. Berte, a prostate cancer survivor, is a leader in UAB’s “Rays of Hope” campaign to raise $15 million for a new radiation oncology facility.

Parnell, a commercial mortgage banker, serves on the UAB Cancer Center’s Supporters Board as well as the “Rays of Hope” campaign. Strand has been instrumental to establishing some of Alabama’s most successful benefit runs and walks, and for more than 40 years, Virciglio has supported a variety of benefit projects with an emphasis on children, family and community. Washington, also a prostate cancer survivor, is known for his long history of leadership on issues dealing with respect, tolerance, community and justice.
