Put the classroom into action by participating in health professions undergraduate research

The UAB School of Health Professions, which houses several nationally prominent research centers, ranks third nationally among health profession schools in National Institutes of Health funding. Through our mentoring processes, you have the unique opportunity to participate in components of these research programs and other cutting-edge research across the UAB campus.

As a SHP undergraduate researcher, you have opportunities for:

  • individual mentored research experiences.
  • team-based research experiences that bring to life the inter-professional health care team in a community service setting that culminates in a certificate in undergraduate research.
  • earning elective credit in your major by participating in research.

Undergraduate Research Curriculum Offerings

  • Individual Mentored Research Experience

    Allows you to earn elective credit hours in your major while conducting mentored research in the health professions.

    • HRP 200 Responsible Conduct of Research (1 hr)
    • HRP 415 Mentored Research in the Health Professions (1-6 hr)
  • Undergraduate Team Research Certificate

    Bring a friend and do research with your friends! This School of Health Professions certificate is a team-based experience. Students who complete HRP 200, HRP 405, and six hours of HRP 415 with their team will receive a School of Health Professions certificate in undergraduate research.

    • HRP 200 Responsible Conduct of Research (1 hr)
    • HRP 405 Team-Based Problem Solving in the Health Professions (2 hr)
    • HRP 415 Mentored Research in the Health Professions (1-6 hr)

    *Students must complete six hours of HRP 415 with their team, spread over a minimum of two semesters in order to complete the certificate.

  • Research Technician Certificate

    This is our highest level certificate for undergraduate research and is acknowledged on your UAB transcript. It consists of a blend of elective and courses in you major as well as mentored research in the health professions.     • HRP 200 Responsible Conduct of Research (1 hr)
    • BMD 380 OR HCM 460 Research Methods (3 hr) or equivalent
    • HCM 360 Statistics for Managers (3 hr) or approved equivalent
    • HRP 475 Special Topics in Health Services or Clinical Research (2 hr)
    • *HRP 415 Mentored Research in the Health Professions (1-6 hr)
    • Approved science or health professions related electives (7 hr) - Example: BMD 330 Methods in Biotechnology, HCM 350 Medical Terminology, etc…

    *Students must complete six hours of HRP 415 spread over a minimum of two semesters in order to complete the certificate.
