The award is given to those who have graduated with the first degree from SHP within the past 10 years and have made significant professional accomplishments at an early stage in their careers. MSHA/MBA alumnus Kidada Hawkins named Shoals Hospital CEO

Kidada Hawkins, FACHE, alumnus of the UAB MSHA/MBA program, has been named chief executive officer of Shoals Hospital. Hawkins, a member of the UAB Master of Science in Health Administration Class 41, is a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives and has served and held leadership roles in every community he has lived. Lelia Edwards, an alumna of the UAB Master of Science in Health Information program, has been named 2015 Registrar of the Year at the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) by Elekta. Read more

MSHA alumnus Hammett named Swedish Medical Center CEO

Richard Hammett, alumnus of the UAB Master of Science in Health Administration, will be the new President and CEO of Swedish Medical Center, effective August 3, 2015. Read more

Young on list of Top 25 Most Powerful Women in Colorado

Sylvia Young, alumna of the UAB Master of Science in Health Administration (Class 19) program, has been named one of the Top 25 Most Powerful Women by the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce. Winners are nominated by peers and then chosen by the previous year’s Top 25. Young currently serves as president and CEO of HCA Continental Division and HCA-HealthONE. Read more

SHP alumnus Condit named MSHA’s Northeast Market VP/CMO

Brian E. Condit, MD, FAAPMR, graduate of the UAB Master of Science in Health Administration, has been named Vice President / Chief Medical Officer for the Northeast Market of Mountain States Health Alliance. Mountain States has 14 hospitals and serves 29 counties in Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky and North Carolina. It is that region’s largest healthcare system. Read more

AHIMA honors Slovensky, Hicks for Outstanding Contributions

The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) honored two University of Alabama at Birmingham alumnae at its annual AHIMA Triumph Awards ceremony. Donna J. Slovensky, Ph.D., RHIA, FAHIMA, received the Literacy Legacy Award and Joan C. Hicks, MSHI, RHIA, received the Innovation Award. Read more

School of Health Professions boasts first UAB alumni chapter in Saudi Arabia

EMSHA Class 1 graduationEMSHA Class 1 graduation, Dec. 2013The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s National Alumni Society has formally recognized the UAB Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) Alumni Chapter. The first NAS chapter established in the Middle East includes 31 graduates of Saudi Arabia’s inaugural UAB Executive Master of Science in Health Administration. The chapter is open to any UAB graduate that lives in Saudi Arabia. Read more

UAB Excellence in Business honors PT alumnus Kleinman

When Ron Kleinman, PT, was looking for a college to attend he wrote, that’s correct - he physically wrote, to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and asked for a list of the best Physical Therapy schools in the United States. The APTA wrote back and placed the University of Alabama at Birmingham at the top of the list and Kleinman was soon on his way south from Ohio.

UAB Excellence in Business honors Jan Jacks

University of Alabama at Birmingham alumna Jan Jacks is an artist. Her works are vivid and rich and she uses oils and fingers to create masterpieces that are devoured over and over again by the public.

However, Jacks is not your traditional artist. She is the owner, baker and artist behind Dreamcakes Bakery located in Homewood, Ala. Read more

SHP alumna first Genetic Counselor for UAB Cytogenetics Lab

When the University of Alabama at Birmingham Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory decided to hire their first ever genetic counselor they started by meeting with prospective applicants at the 2012 National Society of Genetic Counselors conference in Boston - the logical place to find the best genetic counselors in the United States.

Chapman inducted into Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame

Robert Chapman inducted into Alabama Healthcare Hall of FameRobert Chapman, center, is congratulated for being inducted into Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame by SHP Dean Harold Jones, left, and MSHA alumni Gary Glasscock. Robert C. Chapman, LFACHE, a 1972 graduate of the Master of Science in Health Administration, was one of 12 people inducted to the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame on Saturday, July 28. The 2012 class was honored not only for their work in medicine and health, but also as players in some of the most vital issues of their time.
