All faculty in the Department of Epidemiology have research backgrounds, and many have public health practice experience. Research and practice are done in all major areas of epidemiology, including cardiovascular diseases; cancer; infectious diseases; injury; occupational diseases; diseases relating to diet, exercise and obesity; and genetics/genomics of complex diseases. Department faculty collaborate with research teams in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine, other UAB Schools, other departments within SOPH, and with research teams at other universities. Course work in the disease content areas, as well as courses in epidemiologic methods at the master’s and doctoral level, emphasize epidemiologic study design, data collection, management and analysis, and appropriate interpretation and application of research results.

Several faculty work with the Jefferson County, Alabama Health Department, or with the Alabama Department of Public Health in Montgomery, on projects of mutual interest. Faculty and senior staff from those institutions serve on advisory boards in the School, give epidemiology seminars, and oversee MPH student internships.
