Distance/Online Students

Are you an online or distance student? Exclusively for online and distance students, the University Writing Center offers tutoring through our online system. Just like with face-to-face sessions, we can help with any writing project at any stage of the writing process.

We offer two types of distance tutoring:

  • eTutoring: Upload a paper and receive feedback from a tutor.
  • Online Tutoring: Chat about your writing in real-time with a tutor.

Who can use distance tutoring?

UAB students enrolled in an online/distance course can use eTutoring or online tutoring. See below for more about how eTutoring and online tutoring work.

For on-campus (in-person) courses, students are expected to use face-to-face tutoring at our location in Sterne Library.

How can distance tutoring help me?

Our distance tutors can help you with any writing project at any stage of the writing process. For example, we can help you revise and edit drafts and improve your citation skills. We can even help you get started on a writing project or get restarted when you get stuck.

Please note that while we are happy to help with editing and citing, we do not edit drafts or check citations for you. Our goal is to help you improve as a writer, which requires your involvement.

How does eTutoring work?

In eTutoring, you upload a paper when you schedule an appointment. A tutor will write comments on your paper during the appointment time. You do not need to be present. When the tutor has finished looking at your paper, you will receive an email with your paper attached. You can also log in to our online system at your convenience to download your paper with comments.

Quick tip: You can also schedule an appointment and upload the paper later. As long as the paper is uploaded before the beginning of your appointment, you're good to go!

How does online tutoring work?

In online tutoring, you chat in real time with a tutor. Just log onto our online system at your appointment time, click your appointment box (in red), and click "Start or Join Online Consultation." During your session, you can also upload your paper or other documents to the whiteboard so that you and your tutor can collaboratively make edits, revisions, and comments as you chat.

Can I also use face-to-face tutoring?

How often can I work with a tutor?

Each week, you can have either one 50-minute tutoring session or two 25-minute tutoring sessions. This is for all types of sessions combined (face-to-face, eTutoring, and online). We can sometimes give students a third 25-minute session. Please call the front desk to schedule a third session. We are not able to provide extra sessions during the last two weeks of class.
