UAB Medicine is one of the top academic medical centers in the United States and Alabama's largest single-site employer. Anchored by UAB Hospital, the center's ambulatory care facilities, VA Medical Center, and Children's Hospital of Alabama are located within easy walking distance of each other, and many pathways are connected by sky bridges for easy access.

University Hospital (UH) is a 1,157 bed state-of-the-art facility that serves as the tertiary referral center for the state of Alabama at beyond. As the third largest public hospital in the nation, UH encompasses 11 city blocks and is the centerpiece of the UAB Medical Center. In addition to the common medical condititions seen at any hospital, UH also regularly provides care for patients suffering from unusual diseases referred in from all over the Southeast.

The Birmingham Veteran's Administration Medical Center (VA) is a 313 bed acute care facility located in downtown Birmingham directly across the street from the University Hospital. The VA provides primary care services to Birmingham's veterans and serves as the main referral center for veterans throughout the state of Alabama.

Children's Hospital of Alabama is conveniently located just one block from UAB Hospital. The close relationship between the two facilities is evident in their frequent collaboration. Children's Hospital serves as the primary teaching hospital for the UAB Department of Pediatrics.
