The Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Student Media Club is open to anyone who has an interest in media, whether TV, radio, film, or digital media. The organization’s goal is to broaden opportunities for students who would like to advance their knowledge, standing, and connection in the media industry by linking students with industry professionals, faculty, and other students who hold similar interests.
The Student Media Club hosts regular events throughout the year, including guest speakers, technical workshops, film screenings, social gatherings, field trips, service events, and lectures. The organization also manages the annual Steel Reel Film Festival, hosted on campus each Spring. Steel Reel Film Festival
The Steel Reel Film Festival is an annual event hosted by the BEA Student Media Club at UAB each spring in the Hill Student Center Alumni Theater on campus. Steel Reel is a competitive event open to student and amateur filmmakers in the state of Alabama. Videos in different categories are assessed by a panel of guest judges, who decide category winners and the award for Best in Show, all of which are announced at the live screening each year. The audience at the event also has the opportunity to vote for its favorite video of the evening, resulting in the Audience Choice Award. Categories include documentary, narrative, experimental, animation, PSA, music video, and presenter-led programs. The screening is free and open to the public and includes free food and door prizes.
The 3rd Annual Steel Reel Film Festival will accept entries until April 1, 2019, and the event date is set for April 18, 2019, in the Hill Student Center.
