River Beach

            —Spring 2019
Once the hurricane was done,
the county bulldozed down
the high-hilled sand into
shapes of what we knew—
beach, lawn, parking lot
wobbly, approximate.
Now, where the frog puddle was,
one black-eyed Susan pushes
up from the flattened-back soil
like it’s been here all
along. And now outflowers.
And now the county mower.
