The Department of History has a limited number of graduate assistantships awarded on a competitive basis, which can be awarded during any semester as vacancies occur. The department also offers scholarships and awards that can help graduate assistants with tuition costs.

Department Scholarships and Awards

Joseph Dudley and Helen H. Sutter Scholarship in Southern History

Graduate students majoring in History, preferably southern history, are eligible for the Joseph Dudley and Helen H. Sutter Scholarship. Preference is also given to students who show promise as a teacher of history.

The recipient of this scholarship is selected by the chair of the History Department or by a committee chosen by the department chair. Applicants are reviewed by faculty members; the top five will be interviewed and the winner of the scholarship will be chosen from those five students.

  • Application Deadline: October 15 and February 15
  • Requirements: Students must demonstrate academic promise and earn at least 3.0 GPA prior to application. Students must also demonstrate financial need for the scholarship as determined by the UAB Office of Financial Aid.

David Hart White Prize in History

The David Hart White Prize consists of a prize and a scholarship. To receive either award, the recipient must be a history graduate student.

The prize amount is $500 plus an engraved silver tray. The graduate assistant scholarship is one-half tuition and fees per semester.

Details

  • Application Deadline: Students do not apply. The recipient is chosen by the graduate faculty.
  • Award Process: A committee of the history graduate faculty selects the prize recipient based on outstanding participation in the graduate program. This may or may not include research activities, degree status, or GPA. When the graduate faculty selects graduate assistants, they may also chose to award the partial scholarship.
