Graduate Programs

Are you ready to accept a challenge? Are you considering a career in education, business, industry, or government? Are you interested in an academic career at a college or university? The Department of Mathematics offers M.S. and Ph.D. programs.

Why Study Mathematics at UAB?

""Research Mathematics is a highly creative science, a fact which is not always conveyed well in Bachelor's programs. We make a strong effort to convey this to incoming graduate students and help them make the necessary transition. One of the ways we do this is by offering several highly student-centered classes — doing proofs is better than seeing proofs — and by providing many opportunities for one-on-one interaction with faculty.

Among the department's faculty are world-class researchers in a broad range of areas of mathematical analysis such as differential equations, dynamical systems, and mathematical physics. In these and other ares of current research interest, we bridge the divide between pure and applied mathematics, whose unity is one of our core beliefs.

Our success in providing students with the skills required for successful careers as mathematics practitioners, higher mathematics teachers, or academic researchers is evidenced through the success of our alumni. Many of our M.S. graduates have moved on to Ph.D. programs, not just at UAB and not just in Mathematics. A large number of our Ph.D. graduates have gone on to academic careers at highly reputed institutions.

Choose Your Path

Our Master's program aims to give you the background to use mathematics in a variety of ways. We train you in mathematical rigor â€” the ability to analyze and solve problems in all walks of life. We also emphasize developing your communication skills, in the classes you take as well as in the classes you teach. Our goal is to prepare you for a variety of careers or to continue your studies to the doctorate level.

Our Ph.D. program focuses on preparing students interested in an academic career in a college or university as well as students interested in a career in business, industry, or government.
