Policies
All users must agree to adhere to CEMF policies before being approved to use the facility. Members of UAB research groups—students, postdocs, or other non-PI researchers—should read the User version of the agreement and co-sign with their PI. UAB PIs new to the CEMF should also read the PI version of the agreement and co-sign with their department or division chair. External users should email

FBS Access
The CEMF uses the Facility Billing System (FBS) for scheduling, logging instrument time and supplies used, and managing billing. UAB PIs, lab managers, and other administrators may retrieve invoices, add funding account aliases, and specify which accounts are available to individual lab members. All users may request assisted instrument time in the FBS scheduling system with subsequent approval by facility personnel. Trained users must schedule and accurately record their usage of CEMF instruments and supplies using FBS. Occasionally, FBS is used to broadcast important announcements and updates.

Data Storage
Cryo-EM data collection can produce multiple terabytes of files per day. Users are responsible for long-term data storage consistent with NIH or other funding agency standards. Raw data files should be retrieved (or backed up) from CEMF storage via Globus file transfer as soon as possible and are subject to deletion after 30 days.
UAB users can utilize 5 TB of personal storage space on the Cheaha Supercomputer provided at no cost by UAB Research Computing with access to the system. PIs can request 25 TB of project space and 75 TB of cloud-based Long-Term Storage for their lab also at no cost. These spaces are accessible via Globus file transfer.
Manually acquired images not intended for data processing (totaling GBs in size) may be provided via cloud storage to new or infrequent users for convenience.

Training
Training to use CEMF equipment and procedures is available upon request to UAB users according to the rate(s) listed in Instruments & Services {link to page}. The training is conducted one-on-one or in small groups with hands-on practice covering requested topics and using either standard or user-provided samples. Trained users are granted access to internal written protocols, the physical space via keycard, and email announcements with critical updates regarding relevant equipment and other topics.
After successful training, users may utilize CEMF equipment with supervision/monitoring by facility personnel. At the discretion of CEMF personnel, after demonstrating competence and consistent adherence to facility policies and expectations, users may be certified for independent access to CEMF equipment without supervision.
