About the Program

Are you interested in the academic side of dentistry? In about eight years, our innovative, integrated-clinician scientist training DMD/PhD program will provide the skills needed for a career in academia and dentistry.

To begin, you'll need to finish at least two years of coursework in the UAB Graduate School. This will include passing your qualifying examinations and completing a dissertation proposal defense, all while maintaining a 3.0 GPA. Then, after you're admitted for PhD candidacy, your advisory committee will approve you to transition to the DMD curriculum. This means you'll enter the program as a first-year dental student and continue your second to fourth years on the traditional path with your classmates. Finally, when you finish the program, we'll award both your DMD and PhD degrees at the same time.
