Alliance Announces Its First Scholarship Winner

The Alliance for LGBT Equality at UAB is pleased to announce that UAB junior Whitney Shea Julian is the Alliance's first scholarship recipient. The scholarship is in the amount of $1,000. Ms. Julian is double-majoring in Political Science and Sociology with a minor in World Languages (Spanish). Her career goal is to teach Political Science at the university level. Her academic interests include research and statistics.

Ms. Julian's passion is contributing her time and energy to non-profit organizations, particularly those advocating for women's and LGBT rights. She currently serves as Vice President of the Gay/Straight Student Alliance (GSSA) at UAB, is actively involved in Equality Alabama, in the Alabama National Organization of Women (NOW), and in Birmingham's Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN). She accomplishes all of this while maintaining an outstanding academic record.

Reception:

The Alliance hosted a reception for Ms. Julian on Thursday, Sept. 29th, 2011. The reception, which was held in the Administration Building's large Penthouse Conference Room, was very well-attended. Attendees included UAB President Carol Z. Garrison, Vice Provost Suzanne E. Austin, faculty and staff members, and students. The Gay/Straight Student Alliance at UAB (GSSA) and UAB Safe Zone co-sponsored the event. Refreshments were provided by UAB Safe Zone.
