The Alliance Announces Its 2013 Scholarship Winner

The Alliance for LGBT Equality at UAB is pleased to announce that it has selected UAB graduate student Stephanie G. Perry as the recipient for its $1,000 scholarship for the 2013/2014 academic year.

Ms. Perry, who is a graduated Cum Laude from the University of Montevallo, is currently working on her masters degree at UAB in Counselor Education. She maintains an outstanding GPA, and looks forward to serving the LGBTQ community in Birmingham through a career in counseling.

However, Ms. Perry is not waiting until she has graduated in order to get started. She is an active member of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and has served on the board of PFLAG Birmingham since April, 2011. She has also served as an Adult Advisor to members of the Birmingham Alliance of Gay, Straight, Lesbian Youth (BAGSLY) since June, 2012. She has been a student member of the Association for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues in Counseling of Alabama (ALGBTICAL). And since August 2010, she has been a member of the Magic City Choral Society, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit choral community, which performs benefit concerts for AIDS Alabama, UAB's 1917 Clinic, and Birmingham AIDS Outreach.

Ms. Perry is employed as Patient Services Coordinator at UAB's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology. That position has fueled her thirst for knowledge and for improving LGBTQ community resources. She has come to understand that many members of the LGBTQ community are often put in the difficult position of educating their own physicians on how best to treat them. She plans to work with UAB Psychiatry's Department Chair, Dr. Meador-Woodruff, to help put into motion Birmingham's first LGBTQ Mental Health and Wellness Clinic. All providers and staff will be trained and knowledgeable with up-to-date LGBTQ literature and will provide ethical, professional, and compassionate therapy, advising, and consultations.

Reception:

The Alliance hosted a reception for Ms. Perry on Wednesday, August 21st, 2013. Dr. Ray L. Watts, President of UAB, presented the award. Refreshments were provided by the UAB Safe Zone Program.
