Currently I am an Adjunct Instructor in the English as a Second Language program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and I have served as an adjunct for Curriculum and Instruction since 2011. I am also a reading teacher for the Jefferson County School System and an Adjunct Instructor for Judson College, where I have served as Assistant Professor of Education for the last three years. Previously, I was a reading and English teacher in the Pell City School System for 13 years.

My educational background includes a bachelor's degree in Communication from The University of Alabama, Master's degree in Secondary Education English/Language Arts 6-12 from UAB, PhD in Early Childhood Education with literacy concentration from UAB, and graduate certificate in Teaching Multilingual Learners from UAB in 2020.

My passion for teaching reading began when I embarked on a second career in the field of education when my only child, Sam, entered kindergarten. As a substitute teacher, I encountered students at the high school level who could not read, and I began furthering my education to make a difference in the lives of learners with diverse literacy needs. I am honored to continue to teach EESL 540/640 Teaching Second Languages through Reading and Writing where I have the opportunity to share my love of teaching reading and writing with those pursuing degrees in teaching multilingual learners.
