Why did you choose UAB?

I chose UAB because I originally wanted to pursue a degree in medicine, going against what I was truly passionate about: education. Choosing a career path can be overwhelming, and it can be easy to listen to others and not yourself, whether those people be your family, friends, or society. What’s important is to take a step back from other people’s opinions and ask yourself what you truly want to do. Although I chose UAB because I originally wanted to pursue medicine, I am so glad I get to be a part of the UAB family because of the connections I have made here.

Why did you choose your major?

I want to be a middle school English teacher because I want to be part of the safe space to help middle schoolers figure out who they are and be a positive influence in their lives. Growing up, school provided me with a space to learn more about the world and myself. UAB has also become a space of self-exploration for me. Although the students at UAB come from various backgrounds and experiences, we all have something to bring to the table to contribute to a better future.

What piece of advice would you give a prospective SOEHS student?

Others may discourage you from pursuing a career in education, due to its many challenges. When choosing a career, it’s important to listen to yourself and what you want. Although teaching is not an easy career, the fulfillment brought about by following the career path you’re passionate about is unmatched.

What are your plans after you graduate from UAB?

After I graduate, I plan on going to graduate school. I also plan on becoming certified to teach English as a Second Language.
