The Alternative Master of Arts in Education in Visual Arts is designed for individuals who hold an undergraduate degree in art or a related field and wish to earn teacher certification.

At UAB, our art education students become skilled, reflective teachers through an innovative program in arts education. Students will take both education and studio classes. We deliver cutting-edge instruction through a standards-based, inquiry-focused approach. Based on constructivism, this approach prepares educators to use state-of-the-art instructional strategies in their classrooms.

Admissions Requirements

To be considered for admission to the visual arts program, applicants must meet the AMP admission requirements and attend an AMP information session. Applicants to the visual arts AMP must have an undergraduate major in a related field AND an art admissions interview and portfolio. 

Alternative Master's Program

The Alternative Masters Program (AMP) is designed for individuals who hold an undergraduate degree in a field outside of education who want to become certified teachers. Students who successfully complete the AMP will earn a master’s degree in education and be eligible for Class A certification in their specific teaching field.
