Seventeen faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students from the UAB Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) attended the Biomedical Engineering Society’s (BMES) 2022 Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, October 12-15. The number includes Jeffrey Holmes, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the UAB School of Engineering, and is the largest group UAB has taken to BMES to date.

The meeting provides opportunities for the best and brightest in the BME field to shine by sharing their latest work with a community of peers, through panel discussions, relationship building, and the presentation of research posters and projects.

Undergraduate students Allyson Criswell, Peyton Clark, Faith Muriuki, Chloe Demellier, Yancey Williams II, and Rachel Matthews, alongside graduate students Maranda Tidwell, Bronte Miller, Adam Kotar, Vaishali Bala, Xixi Zhang, and Rory Greer, and BME alumni Gillian Huskin and Allison Johnson, presented their academic research projects on topics ranging from quantifying cancer cell migration to drug resistance.

“This is the first time I’ve been able to take so many students to an in-person conference, “says M.K. Sewell-Loftin, Ph.D., Professor. “Watching them learn about how our work intersects with other labs’ projects, and watching them interact with their peers from other institutions was really exciting for me. I’m proud of how they represented our lab and our department.”

BMES is an international professional society for biomedical engineering and bioengineering. It is home to more than 5,000 members. BME hosts a booth at BMES each year and has attended for more than 11 years. Department members look forward to attending the BMES 2023 meeting in Seattle, Washington next October.

“My experience with BMES was fantastic!” says Adam Kotar, Ph.D. student. “It was the first time I’ve presented my own data and it was fulfilling to receive feedback from attendees. The talks sparked interesting ideas and conversations over the course of the weekend. I’m grateful I had the opportunity to present and I’m looking forward to next year!”

Finding “a little bit of everything” in biomedical engineering

When she was in high school in Houston, Texas, Daniela De Nobrega was “all over the sciences,” she said. “Calculus, statistics, physics — I liked them all. So when I got to college, I wanted to find a major that offers a little bit of everything.” That is how she ended up as a biomedical engineering major in the UAB School of Engineering. “Biomedical engineering is challenging but also encouraging,” said De Nobrega, who is a sophomore and member of the UAB Honors College Personalized Honors Program. “It makes you want to keep learning.”
