Senior Pratheek Bobba has been named BME’s Outstanding Undergraduate Student of the Year.

He was selected based on his academic accomplishments, research activities, and leadership contributions to the School of Engineering. Bobba has been an undergraduate researcher in Dr. Ho-Wook Jun’s lab since fall of 2016. He works on the application of nitric oxide–releasing peptide amphiphile coatings and gels to medical devices and procedures. He recently defended his undergraduate thesis entitled: “Enhancement of endothelialization on left atrial appendage closure devices with a nitric oxide releasing bionanomatrix coating.”

In Jun’s lab, Bobba has also had the opportunity to present at national conferences such as BMES. He was able to “view scientific innovation from an industrial perspective and realize how basic science research can actually have potential for eventual clinical use.”

Bobba also contributes to UAB and the community outside of the School of Engineering. He is a two-time UAB Ambassador and currently serves as Vice President of Administration for the program. Through this program, he is able to represent UAB and the student body to UAB and Birmingham community. He is able to educate his peers and guide them on their academic journeys as a tutor for the Vulcan Materials Academic Success Center. He is also an active volunteer for Equal Access Birmingham and the Greater Birmingham Human Society.
