Prasanna Krishnamurthy, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been appointed as Graduate Program Director, effective immediately.

Krishnamurthy will work alongside the UAB Graduate School and Graduate Program Committee to develop and administer the graduate programs and policies within the department. He will provide assistance to students on their graduation tracks, approve degree plans, and provide general advising related to their academic learning experiences.

Krishnamurthy is an educator and researcher with more than 20 years of academic experience. He has a diverse research background in cell and molecular biology, immunology, toxicology and pathology in cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, diabetes, sepsis and tissue remodeling. He has successfully mentored numerous trainees, including postdoctoral fellows, undergraduate and graduate students, and junior faculty and volunteers, who went on to pursue careers in academia and the field of biomedical engineering.

“Education is a gift to empower individuals, change lives, and transform society for the better,” Krishnamurthy says. “I am greatly looking forward to serving in this role to facilitate enriched learning experiences for students.”

Krishnamurthy assumes the role from predecessor Yuhua Song, Ph.D., professor in Biomedical Engineering, who served as Associate Director of the graduate program from 2020-2021 and Graduate Program Director from 2021-2022.

“With Dr. Krishnamurthy’s experience in mentoring, I am fully confident in his ability to lead the BME Graduate Program with determination and success,” Song says.
