The UAB Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is pleased to announce that Yuhua Song, Ph.D., has been promoted to professor, effective October 1, 2022.
Song joined UAB in 2006 as assistant professor from Washington University in St. Louis’ Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics where she was a research instructor in the Center for Computational Biology. She earned her Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology, China before completing postdoctoral training for computational mechanics in Tsinghua University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering in Beijing, China, and for computational biomechanics in University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Since 2009, Song has established biochemical and biological experimental components in her research group to complement her strength in computational modeling. Song was promoted to tenured associate professor in 2012.
Song’s research uses integrated multiscale computational modelling and experimental approaches to investigate the structural, molecular and functional mechanisms of biomolecular interactions. Her goal is to identify endo- and exogenous small molecules to regulate the biomolecular interactions underlying important cellular activities in Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and regenerative and precision medicine for potential therapeutic treatment. Song’s research program is currently funded by NIH R01, NSF, Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation and UAB internal grants.
In addition to Song’s appointment as professor, she serves as scientist in UAB’s Centers for Clinical and Translational Science and Neurodegeneration and Experimental Therapeutics, and associate scientist in UAB’s Comprehensive Cancer Center.
“I am honored to be promoted to full professor in BME at UAB,” Song says. “I will continue to make every effort toward excellence in teaching, research, and service to contribute to the department, school and university.”
