What is the LRC?

  • Work with a tutor one-on-one
  • Work in a group with guidance from a tutor
  • Study independently or with guidance from a tutor
  • Attend workshops on important academic topics

Why should I go to tutoring?

In American academic culture, tutoring is an expected, normal part of studying at a university. Our tutors want to help you achieve academic success by guiding you through assignments and providing you with valuable resources and materials you may use for future independent study. Visiting the LRC is an important part of the success of every INTO UAB student and a critical part of your success at UAB.

What kinds of one-on-one or group tutoring are available?

Content area specialists are available for all INTO UAB Pathway degree programs. These tutors help you navigate through your classroom lectures and assignments in small groups of no more than three or four students. Attached is an example of the array of courses for which we offer tutoring.

English language tutors are able to help you with any area of fluency – listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation, grammar. English language tutoring is available to any non-native English speaker in the UAB family, including INTO UAB Students as well as degree-seeking UAB students, scholars, faculty, and employees.

We also offer tutoring by request for the following exams: TOEFL, IELTS, and GRE.

How can I study independently in the LRC?

In the LRC, you may practice English with language-learning software called “Issues in English” on our computers or choose from a wide selection of study materials in our library, including test preparation books for TOEFL, IELTS, GMAT or GRE.

What types of workshops are available to students?

We offer a variety of workshops each semester, and the topics for these are given to students at the beginning of each semester. Some workshop topics from previous semesters have included plagiarism, library research tools, and English pronunciation. Students may register for these on our scheduling website.

How do I make an appointment?

To make an appointment with a tutor in the LRC, you first need to register for an account with our scheduling website: uab.mywconline.net. After creating an account, you may begin making appointments with tutors and signing up for workshops.

When is the LRC open?
