UAB Marketing and Communications does not recommend licensing for popular music from a major label, publisher, or rights aggregator (e.g., Sony Music Publishing, Universal Music Publishing, Warner Chappell, ASCAP/BMI-registered commercial artists) due to the following reasons:
Reputation & Brand
As stewards of public resources, UAB must remain mindful of its fiscal responsibility and related public perception, the financial climate affecting our students, patients, faculty and staff, and scrutiny from philanthropic donors, lawmakers and others who expect us to use funds wisely. Consequences to any perception that UAB is not using funds responsibly could have serious consequences for the UAB community and those we serve. Further, there is reputational risk involved with a public university and academic medical center aligning with an artist for marketing purposes, as future actions or public controversies are outside UAB’s control and may not align with institutional values.
Long-Term Value
Videos are typically used for several years, licensing is often based on one year of full use. Additional fees are typically required for extended use, which could affect long-term value if needs change.
