Center for Exercise Medicine

Moving Research into Medicine

The UAB Center for Exercise Medicine (UCEM) focuses on improving the health and well-being of children and adults of all ages through acceleration of innovative, exercise-based interdisciplinary research across five pillars – precision, regeneration, rehabilitation, interaction, and sustainability.

Interested in participating in exercise research?

We are looking for volunteers for various exercise-based studies to help understand the role of exercise as medicine at the molecular, cellular and clinical levels. By participating, you receive supervised exercise training from certified trainers, valuable information about your health.

Opportunities to Participate

Research

The center's research mission is to build a foundation of excellence for innovative and large-scale, multi-investigator studies that help advance the field of exercise biology and medicine.

Our Studies and Services

Training & Education

UCEM offers a multi-tiered education and training program structured for exercise medicine researchers ranging from undergraduates to senior scientists.

UCEM Research Acceleration Program

The UAB Center for Exercise Medicine established at inception several key, low-cost programs to foster interdisciplinary and extramurally funded research by engaging members and investigators campus-wide.

Research Roundtable

The Research Roundtable is an informal, breakfast meeting that gathers an interdisciplinary group to discuss a given grant application at any stage of development or revision. Roundtables are open and occur twice a month.

Sponsored External Reviews

The UCEM will help recruit and provide $250 honoraria to external pre-submission reviewers to enhance the quality of extramural grant applications. Reviews are done by leading experts in specified fields and provide evaluations on strengths and weaknesses of a proposal.

Pilot Grant Supplement Program

With limited budgets, pilot grants often have no funds for travel, publication or other costs. UCEM has set aside funds to supplement pilot grants that are exercise-focused.

Investigator Consultation

We provide free consultation to investigators with disease- or model-specific expertise who seek to pursue exercise research in their model, but do not have the appropriate experience.
