The HSOM STAR21 Awards Program offers recipients financial support and access to a valuable networking platform to propel their careers. Each STAR21 awardee is granted $3,750 per year for two years, amounting to $7,500 in scientific discretionary funds. These discretionary funds are intended to complement the awardee's training and educational pursuits. HSOM STAR21 awardees have the flexibility to utilize these funds for various purposes, such as attending scientific conferences, enrolling in advanced courses to enhance their education, embarking on a brief sabbatical to acquire new techniques in another laboratory, procuring reagents for experiments, or acquiring computer equipment and software for their research needs. In addition, each STAR21 awardee receives a $2,500 cash award upon initiation of the GBS degree program at UAB.

Furthermore, in addition to the STAR21 awardee's discretionary funds, the Primary Mentor of the STAR21 awardee receives $7,500 per year for two years. This funding becomes available after the conclusion of the GBS stipend support, typically around 16-18 months after entering the program.

STAR21 awardees seeking additional support have the option to select a STAR21 scientific mentoring committee. While this is not mandatory, it is a valuable resource for those who desire extra support. The mentoring committee commits to reviewing and providing constructive feedback on any fellowship applications the awardees may prepare during their tenure at UAB. This collaboration significantly enhances the likelihood of success in securing highly competitive fellowships.

Lastly, the announcement of new HSOM STAR21 awardees is featured in the UAB School of Medicine News at the time of their matriculation at UAB. They are also invited to an annual reception, affording them the opportunity to connect with faculty members from various disciplines across the campus.
