Immunology Education

The Undergraduate Immunology Society (UIS) aims to invest in Alabama communities and provide students with unique and free STEM educational opportunities that increase student knowledge about the immune system. All members of UIS have been inspired by our teachers and understand how critical early introduction to STEM is. We aim to support students and teachers by providing resources that can be adapted to the needs of a classroom. Our activities include sessions at the McWane Science Center, weekly events for UAB students, and partnerships with community organizations. Currently, we're expanding our outreach to elementary schools, delivering foundational immunology concepts directly to young learners.

Benefits of the UIS Educational Program

  • Hands-On Learning: The program offers a unique and engaging hands-on learning experience. Participants have the opportunity to interact with tangible materials like 3D printed germs, demonstrations, and other educational resources. This type of experiential learning can be more effective in understanding complex scientific concepts.
  • Application of Scientific Method: Teaching immunology can introduce children to the scientific method by encouraging them to observe, hypothesize, and experiment. This foundational understanding helps them approach scientific inquiries with a structured mindset in future classes. Early Exposure to Advanced Science: By introducing participants to the intricacies of immunology, our program provides an early exposure to a field of science that is typically explored at more advanced levels of education.
