    UAB Blazer BRAIN

    UAB Blazer Broadening Representation and Inclusion in Neuroscience (Blazer BRAIN) is an 8-week program that provides students with excellent scientific aptitude the opportunity to experience independent research in neurosciences under the guidance of a UAB faculty member.

  • UAB Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Summer Undergraduate Research Program (CFF-SURP)
    UAB Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Summer Undergraduate Research Program (CFF-SURP)

    This is an 8 week program funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to introduce outstanding undergraduates to basic and translational research that is impactful to CF.

    Up to 8 students will be accepted into this CF-focused, paid summer program to work with faculty affiliated with the UAB Gregory Fleming James Cystic Fibrosis Research Center. CF SURP students will be given the opportunity to learn a wide range of research and professional development skills, with the potential option of a clinical or clinical research shadowing experience. Students will receive a stipend.

  • HudsonAlpha BioTrain Internship
    HudsonAlpha BioTrain Internship

    HudsonAlpha BioTrain Internship program offers students with the opportunity to connect classwork with real-world experience and gain skills and knowledge that will prepare them for careers in biotechnology and related fields. BioTrain accepts 25-30 interns each summer. Interns work from 10 to 30 hours per week, depending on the position.

    UAB Kidney, Urology, and Hematology Undergraduate Research Program (KUH KURE)

    KUH KURE—The Kidney, Urology, and Hematology (KUH) Undergraduate Research Experience program is an NIH-funded Summer Research Program that allows you to learn about advances in kidney, urology, and non-malignant hematology research. The University of Alabama at Birmingham's renowned KUH community of investigators will mentor you in your research project in a lab. This 12-week program (three weeks are virtual) provides an in-depth experience in the field of biomedical research.

  • UAB O’Neal ACS Discoveries in Cancer Research (DICR) Internship
    UAB O’Neal ACS Discoveries in Cancer Research (DICR) Internship

    This is a 10-week program funded by the American Cancer Society to introduce outstanding undergraduates to in-lab cancer research. Up to 4 students will be accepted into this cancer research-focused, paid summer program to work with mentors affiliated with the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. DICR students will be given the opportunity to learn a wide range of research and professional development skills and learn from mentors engaging in real-time cancer research in operational labs.

  • UAB Preparation for Graduate and Medical Education (PARAdiGM)
    UAB Preparation for Graduate and Medical Education (PARAdiGM)

    Preparation for Graduate and Medical Education (PARAdiGM) is an NIH/NHLBI-funded 8-week program to introduce outstanding undergraduates to the exciting career options of being a scientific investigator and a practicing physician. Students will work with UAB faculty on mentored research projects and participate in clinical shadowing experiences. In addition to receiving a stipend and campus housing for the summer, students will travel to the national ABRCMS meeting to present their research.

    UAB Research and Clinical Exp in Pathology for Undergrads (RaCE4Path-UG)

    Undergraduate students will be recruited for the Research and Clinical Exp in Pathology summer program through the PSDO Application portal. This 8-week program will blend both clinical and research training in the area of pathology for a shared-science approach to learning.

    UAB Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

    Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) is a regional initiative to promote undergraduate participation in experimental and computational materials research. The NSF REU program provides a 10-week, hands-on research experience where participants will work in some of the UAB labs with renowned scientists. The research represents actual projects that will contribute in some way to the work already being conducted in the labs.

    UAB Summer In Biomedical Sciences (SIBS)

    Summer In Biomedical Sciences (SIBS) is an 8-week program where undergraduate students work with UAB faculty on mentored research projects while becoming integrated members of our vibrant academic medicine community. Students receive a stipend and campus housing for the summer.

    UAB Summer Undergraduate and Post-Baccalaureate Experiences in Research for Genomic Medicine (SUPER-GM)

    SUPER-GM (formerly SURE-GM) is an 8-week summer program tailored for students from our partner historically black colleges and universities and other minority-serving institutions. However, all students are welcome to apply, as are students who have faced challenging social, economic, educational, cultural, or other life circumstances.

    UAB Future Surgeons and Scientists Investigation Oncology (FUSSION)

    The Future Surgeons and Scientists Investigation Oncology (FUSSION) program offered by the Department of Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) provides promising undergraduate students who are interested in a medical career with research experience and knowledge that 1) increases their competitiveness for admission to medical school and 2) encourages them to consider careers in academic medicine, particularly the field of surgery.   • UAB Short Term Research Experience for Under-Represented Persons (STEP-UP)

    STEP-UP program is a biomedical research experience for undergraduate students. This program is coordinated at UAB and two other coordinating centers. Students are linked with experienced research mentors at the institution they choose for the summer experience, which may be their home institution or one near their hometown. It is open to students across the country who are interested in exploring research careers. 

    The goal of the NIDDK STEP-UP Program is to build and sustain a biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social science research pipeline focused on NIDDK’s core mission areas of diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases and nutrition; kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases.

  • UAB Research in Aging through Mentorship & Practice Program (RAMP-UP)

    RAMP-UP invites rising sophomore undergraduate students, degree-seeking from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Tuskegee (TU), Alabama A&M University (AAMU), Alabama State University (ASU), Oakwood University (OU), or Stillman College (SC). RAMP-UP provides activities focused on mentored research experiences and education in research regarding senior adults, aging, and health disparities research for underrepresented students in MSTEM fields. It combines it with structured career planning and guidance to increase the likelihood that students will complete graduate studies and enter the research workforce.

  • UAB Cancer Research Immersion Student Program (CRISP)

    CRISP is a Partnership of Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), Tuskegee University (TU), and the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). CRISP seeks to introduce underrepresented minority students at the undergraduate level to cancer research, including research on cancer disparities, via training, mentoring, and coursework. Through participation in designated seminars and workshops, research students will be able to enhance their knowledge, scientific techniques, and expertise in cancer and cancer research.

  • UAB Cancer Partnership Research Summer Training Program (C-PRSTP)

    The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites honors-level undergraduate/post-baccalaureate students majoring in a scientific discipline interested in cancer medicine, basic cancer research, cancer health disparities, or similar to participate in its eight-week Partnership Research Summer Training Program (PRSTP). The overall goal of PRSTP is to establish a program that will encourage interest and facilitate student training in laboratory-based or translational cancer research. Through laboratory attendance and participation in designated seminars, research interns will be able to enhance their knowledge, scientific techniques, and knowledge of cancer and cancer research. Participants in these programs will become stronger candidates for cancer-related master's, PhD, and medical school.

    Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP)

    The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It is a free 6-week summer enrichment residential programs for first and second year college students, developed from a partnership between the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, School of Optometry, and School of Health Professions, home to the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy programs.     Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP)

    Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) encourages underrepresented minorities who hold a recent baccalaureate degree in a biomedical relevant science to pursue a research doctorate. PREP scholars work as apprentice scientists in a preceptor's lab and participate in student development and education activities. This program strengthens the research skills and competitiveness of participants so that they are better prepared to pursue a graduate degree.

  • PSDO630: Physician Experience

    PSDO 630 is a 3-credit hour course for students that are post-graduate or currently in pre-health professional programs considering careers in medicine. The course provides access to medical professionals across the UAB system in both the clinical and classroom setting. The in-person component is dedicated to discussion of clinical and bench research careers, the professional school admissions process, life in training and as a practicing provider, and a variety of associated topics. Attendance at the weekly, 2hr classroom-based interactive sessions is required. The other component of the course requires students to complete a minimum of 15 shadowing hours from multiple established opportunities associated with the Physician Experience program.
