NIH NIGMS Medical Scientist (MD-PHD) Training Program (MSTP)

NIH NIGMS T32 Medical Scientist (MD-PHD) Training Program (MSTP) is designed for those who want to become research physicians, physician-investigators or physician-scientists where they will spend most of their time doing research in addition to caring for patients. Offered at UAB since 1992, this NIH-NIGMS funded program is diverse in many aspects with an integrated curriculum where students take both a selection of medical school and graduate school courses. Students are very involved in the leadership of the program, where they can serve as advisors to the director, help organize the Southeastern Medical Scientist Symposium, plan the annual retreat, and oversee several unique courses. MSTP students receive select benefits such as stipends, tuition coverage, and educational enhancement funds.

MD/MBA Program

MD/MBA Program prepares students to use innovation and design thinking to solve health care problems and become fluent in the languages of medicine and business. The degree opens opportunities for physicians to have leadership responsibilities within their organizations as well as helping to learn how to manage today's increasingly complex healthcare challenges.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Grants for Health Services Research Dissertation Program

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Grants for Health Services Research Dissertation Program (R36) provides support to indiviuals who are conducting research undertaken as part of an accredited academic program to qualify for a research doctorate degree. Deaadlines for submission under this program are: February 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1, annually.

Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research Notification

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notify holders of specific types of research grants (review notification for a list of activity codes) that funds are available for afminstrative supplements to improve the diversity of the research workforce by recruiting and supprting students, post-doctorates, and eligible investigators from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in health-related research. Administrative supplements must support work within the scioe if the original project.
