Biography

Marshall M. Urist, M.D. is a Professor Emeritus of the Department of Surgery at UAB. He is a native Californian who joined the UAB faculty in 1981 after completing his medical education and surgical training at the University of Chicago, the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and the University of California at Los Angeles. He headed the Section of Surgical Oncology from 1985 to 2007. He was the director of the general surgery residency program from 1991 to 2012. His major activities center around surgical education, clinical trials, and patient care. He served as Director of the American Board of Surgery and was Chairman of the Surgical Oncology Advisory Council of the ABS. He has been active in raising educational standards in surgical oncology as chairman of the Training Committee of the Society of Surgical Oncology and as an officer of the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. He is the author or co-author of over 100 journal publications and 40 textbook chapters. Over the past 34 years, he has contributed to the organization, oversight, and accession of cancer clinical trials at the regional, national, and international levels.
