BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Music, in conjunction with the Birmingham Art Music Alliance (BAMA), will present "INTER VIVOS" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8 in the UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. Tickets are $6; $3 for students. For details call 205-934-8056.

"INTER VIVOS," meaning "between living persons," captures the spirit of this program of duets and collaborations between living composers and performers. The program includes an eclectic mix of works with something for everyone.

UAB Assistant Professor of Music William Price, D.M.A., will offer another dramatic entry in his "Sans Titre" series, featuring the talents of UAB Assistant Professor of Music Gene Fambrough, D.M.A., on marimba. Cello pioneer Craig Hultgren, UAB adjunct faculty and Alabama Symphony Orchestra member, will present Ginaluca Verlingieri's "imaginActions" for cello solo. Fambrough and Hultgren will perform together on Josh Crowe's new duet "Off-White," for marimba and cello.

Birmingham musical heavyweights Daniel Szasz and Anthony Pattin will join BAMA to perform Ed Robertson's compelling violin and piano duo "Saints Fantasy," commissioned by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra in 2008 to celebrate the rich contribution that African-Americans have made to the nation's musical heritage. Musical father and son team Lester and Daniel Seigel will present Dorothy Hindman's aria without an opera, "Is This Then a Touch?" for baritone and piano. Dewin Tibbs and Chris Byars will offer up Bryan Page's provocatively titled "Misogyny Songs."

For the technologically minded, Charles Norman Mason will present his collaboration with New York video artist Sheri Wills, "Flutter Arrhythmia," exploring the tension between nature and the mechanical. "Flutter Arrhythmia" recently premiered at the Islip Museum of Art-Carriage House, New York.

Local contemporary piano specialist Adam Bowles will present his selections from Jan Vicar's "Phantasms/Preludes." Czech composer Vicar has enjoyed a long-distance relationship with BAMA since his residency at Birmingham-Southern College in 2005.

This concert will mark BAMA's 15th season of presenting new music by Alabama composers. Through its ongoing concerts and collaborative efforts with composers and performers across the nation, BAMA continues to promote music by Alabama composers and present concerts of recently created art music to communities in Birmingham and beyond. Members include local composers, professional performers, students and enthusiasts who wish to preserve and maintain the long tradition of music as a living art form.
