The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has named Winfield Fisher III, M.D., professor in the Department of Surgery, as the first holder of the Griffith R. Harsh III, M.D., Endowed Chair in Neurosurgery. The appointment was made by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees at its Nov. 6 meeting.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has named Winfield Fisher III, M.D., professor in the Department of Surgery, as the first holder of the Griffith R. Harsh III, M.D., Endowed Chair in Neurosurgery. The appointment was made by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees at its Nov. 6 meeting.

The endowed chair recognizes Harsh as a pioneer in the field of neurosurgery, and his contributions to his profession and to the advancement and education of physicians as a legacy to the science of neurosurgery.

Fisher came to UAB's Department of Surgery in 1990 and became a noted leader in the university's vascular neurosurgery service, earning a full professor appointment in the Division of Neurosurgery in 1997.

A graduate of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine in Missouri, Fisher completed a residency in Maryland and a fellowship in Ontario, Canada, before becoming a clinical assistant professor in the Uniformed Services of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. He was a decorated member of the U.S. Navy for more than two decades.

Fisher is a member of numerous prestigious professional organizations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and he is a past president of the Southern Neurosurgical Society. He serves on the editorial board of Seminars in Neurological Surgery and the ad-hoc review panel for the journals Neurosurgery, Stroke and Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

Fisher is acknowledged as an outstanding clinician and researcher in the fields of neurosurgery and microvascular surgery, and he is recognized as an excellent scholar, teacher and mentor to students and junior investigators.
