• 18 Theatre UAB students nominated for awards

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Theatre's production of "Eurydice" is one of four plays invited to perform at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) Region IV competition Feb. 2-6 at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Eighteen Theatre UAB students are nominated for awards at the festival.

Theatre UAB will perform "Eurydice" Feb. 6. The performance will be viewed by the KCACTF national selection team as a possible choice for the national festival. In 2008, UAB's production of "In the Blood" was one of three shows chosen from 300 plays in consideration nationwide to perform at the national festival.

Students nominated for Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships are Emily Soffe of Enterprise, Sarah Hereford of Huntsville, Jessica Walston of Hoover, Emily Parks of Huntsville, Timothy Craig of Birmingham, Hannah Hughes of Vestavia, Lindsay Allen of Tuscaloosa and Jon Prensner of Colorado Springs, Co.

Students Sarah Brandt of Homewood, Kristina Howard of Vincent, Jordan Bohl of Athens and Jonathon Offutt of Bossier City, La., all are nominated for costume and scenic design competitions sponsored by Barbizon. Jordan Reeves of Hueytown is nominated for the dramaturge, or technique of dramatic composition, competition.

Students Caitlin Suggs of Irondale, Jereme Lewis of Enterprise and Crystal Lee of Millbrook all are nominated for stage management competitions. Suggs and Lewis both were selected for participation in the National Stage Management Fellowship Program, which means their work will be reviewed by professional stage managers with one fellowship participant being nominated for competition at the national level.

Student Daniel Martin's script "Bag Boy" is one of six selected to compete in the festival's 10-minute play competition. Two winners will be named. Martin, of Trinity, also is nominated for "Pink Lemonade" along with "Sick, Sad, Little World" by Alex LaFosta of Birmingham for the festival's short play competition. Two will be selected as winners. Those plays also qualify as finalists for the national John Cauble Short Play Award and will receive readings at the regional festival.

The KCACTF Region IV includes colleges and universities within the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and southern Virginia.
