Alumni named award-winning authors

Two graduates earn “book of the year” awards

Two University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing alumni are “Book of the Year” award winners from the American Journal of Nursing for 2018.

Two-time alumna Mary Bemker, PhD, PSyS, RN, LADC, LPCC, CNE, CCFP, CCTP, is a first-place winner in the Advanced Practice category for her textbook Population Health and its Integration into Advanced Nursing Practice. Bemker earned her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing from the UAB School of Nursing in 1992 and 1996, respectively.

Kelly Goudreau, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, FAAN, is a first-place winner in the Nursing Management and Leadership category for her textbook Health Policy and Advanced Practice Nursing: Impact and Implications. Goudreau earned her PhD from the UAB School of Nursing in 2000.

The American Journal of Nursing (AJN) bestowed “Book of the Year” awards to honor exceptional texts for advancing healthcare quality. Winners were listed in the 2019 issue of AJN.

“This year marks the 49 th year of the AJN Book of the Year Awards, and we’re pleased to continue the tradition of recognizing high-quality publications to help faculty in their efforts to identify materials for teaching and to help clinicians in continuing their learning towards improving care and patient outcomes,” said Maureen Shawn Kennedy, MA, RN, FAAN, Editor in Chief of AJN.
