Caroline Pate, OD, FAAO, has received the Dean’s Distinguished Service Award for faculty, presented by Dean Kelly Nichols. The award recognizes exemplary leadership and service to the UAB School of Optometry and honors individuals who make exceptional contributions to advancing the school’s mission.
Pate, professor and director of the school’s residency programs, has demonstrated a commitment to optometric education, student and resident success, and professional development. Under her leadership, the residency program has expanded to offer more training opportunities, and an increasing number of UAB optometry graduates are choosing to pursue postdoctoral residencies to further their clinical expertise.
Most recently, Pate provided exceptional leadership during the School of Optometry’s reaccreditation process. She has also contributed to the broader profession through her service with the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education and the Council on Optometric Practitioner Education’s Governing Council. A graduate of the UAB School of Optometry’s Family Practice Residency Program, Pate is also widely recognized for the continuing education programs she develops, organizes and presents nationally.
“I am honored to receive the Dean’s Distinguished Service Award,” Pate said. “I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to contribute to residency education, accreditation and professional organizations, and to work alongside colleagues at UAB and across the profession who are committed to strengthening optometric education and advancing patient care.”

Her contributions continue to strengthen the school, support its students and residents, and enhance its reputation within the profession.
