UAB Eye Care was named the 2019 Outstanding Student Affairs Partner for their collaborative work with UAB Student Health Services.

This award honors departments, groups, or individuals outside of the division who have played a visibly active role in assisting in the overall mission of the Division of Student Affairs. Nominees for this award are those who, on a consistent basis, have helped serve the needs of students outside of the classroom.

UAB Eye Care has worked closely with Student Affairs on establishing Optometry Services at the Student Health and Wellness Center to ensure that students have access to care in a familiar environment.

“Professionally, UABSO is consistent, caring, easy to work with and always willing help students and staff as needed,” said Carol Griggs, Student Health Services administrative director. “Student Health Services feels that the UAB School of Optometry puts students first in everything and that makes them an outstanding partners.”

Dr. Beth Steele, School of Optometry associate dean for clinical affairs, and Dr. Maggie Bailey, assistant professor, developed the program.

Optometry Dean Kelly Nichols said, “What an honor! I know this relationship was a long time coming and it is outstanding to see the success and recognition. We look forward to the continuation of this partnership and ensuring that quality optometric care is provided for all.”

In addition to treating patients at Student Health Services, Bailey also provides care at UAB Eye Care’s main clinic at the UAB School of Optometry.
