Urvi Patel, class of 2028, has been elected trustee of the American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) Executive Council. Her election continues the UAB School of Optometry's tradition of student representation in the organization.
As a trustee, she chairs the Professional Development Committee, working to expand resources that help students build professional networks and strengthen patient communication skills.
Before enrolling in optometry school, Patel worked as an optometric technician in Florida. A legislative proposal affecting patient access to eye care introduced her to the American Optometric Association's (AOA) advocacy work and sparked her interest in advocacy.
“Watching the American Optometric Association advocate for the profession and meeting with lawmakers to support optometry was incredibly empowering,” Patel said. “Legislation had been introduced that would have allowed eye care services to be provided without a doctor, and seeing the profession unite in support of optometry inspired me to get involved.”
She is focused on strengthening student involvement while supporting initiatives that advance and protect the future of optometry.
"My goals are to support the growth of the Political Action Committee (PAC) Fund and create additional opportunities for students to develop professionally within optometry," Patel said. "Through PAC fundraising efforts, we support the AOA's advocacy initiatives and help ensure optometry maintains a strong voice in legislative and policy discussions.”
Patel, a third-year student, credits UAB's supportive environment for empowering her to pursue leadership opportunities. Through a curriculum and clinical experiences that emphasize independent thinking, problem-solving and patient-centered care, she has developed the skills and confidence to lead, advocate for others and contribute meaningfully to the profession.
Looking back on her leadership journey, Patel encourages students to get involved and to reach out to current leaders for guidance. She says leadership is what you make of it, and the most rewarding experiences come from supporting your peers, bringing ideas to life, and helping shape the future of the profession.
