Resolution 

Appointing Robert A. Scott, Ph.D. as Associate Professor Emeritus
in the School of Business

WHEREAS, Robert A. Scott, Ph.D., Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Management, School of Business, retired on August 31, 2002, after completing outstanding service to The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) since 1976; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Scott received the Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1963, the MBA and Ph.D. degrees from Georgia State University in 1969 and 1978, respectively; and

WHEREAS. Dr. Scott served as a Lieutenant in the United States Army from 1963-1965; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Scott held responsible positions in industry with Armco Steel Corporation and Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in technical sales and production engineering respectively from 1965-1969; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Scott began his academic career in 1969, at Georgia State University, after completing the MBA degree, and served in increasingly responsible positions as a graduate counselor and instructor of business administration from 1969-1972, as Director of Graduate Counseling from 1972-1974 and as Director, Student Services Division from 1974-1976; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Scott began his esteemed career at The University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1976, as an Assistant Professor and made many lasting contributions to his field of management and to his department; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Scott provided excellent leadership and service to UAB by serving as Associate Dean of the School of Business from 1995-2002 and made a number of significant contributions to the School of Business, including the coordination of the School’s successful reaffirmation of accreditation by the AACSB in 2002; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Scott has served as a consultant to such firms as Alabama Power Company, Butler Manufacturing, Brookwood Medical Center and other organizations; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Scott has been elected to memberships in honor societies such as Beta Gamma Sigma and Sigma Iota Epsilon and has been a member of several academic professional organizations, including the Academy of Management and the Southern Management Association; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Scott has earned the admiration and respect of his students and colleagues at UAB for his dedication, collegiality, enthusiasm, professionalism, sense of humor and hard work;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE RESOLVED by The Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama that it appoints Robert A. Scott, Ph.D., as Associate Professor Emeritus in the School of Business at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Board takes great pleasure in recognizing the significant professional achievements of Robert A. Scott, Ph.D., and herewith expresses its sincere gratitude for the invaluable contributions he has made to The University of Alabama at Birmingham, and to the State of Alabama.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be spread upon the permanent minutes of the Board and that copies be sent to Dr. Robert A. Scott to share with his family; to Dr. Robert E. Holmes, Dean of the School of Business; and to other appropriate officials of The University of Alabama at Birmingham.
