Chemistry facilities.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is one of the world’s leading teaching and research universities. As of 2016, UAB had $538 million in research expenditures, and ranked No. 15 nationally among public universities and No. 31 overall in federally funded research. As such, there are a wealth of research facilities available at UAB that support basic chemical and biochemical research. These core facilities offer state-of-the-art instruments, resources, and technologies for use by UAB researchers and students. Many of these facilities are located within the Chemistry Building, while some are located in other buildings on campus, just a short distance from the department.

The Department of Chemistry is housed in two buildings: the Chemistry Building and the Center for Biophysical Sciences and Engineering (CBSE). The Chemistry Building is a three-story facility in the heart of the UAB campus. It is the main administrative, teaching, and research center for the Department. The main lecture hall and teaching laboratories for general chemistry, organic chemistry, and all upper division courses are housed in newly renovated space in this building. Most faculty offices — as well as laboratories for organic, physical, inorganic, and biochemical research — are located in this facility. The CBSE houses several Chemistry faculty in research labs dedicated to biochemistry and inorganic synthesis. The CBSE is also the home for interdisciplinary labs such as Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Structural Biology Shared Facility and the School of Engineering’s Engineering and Innovative Technology Development group.

Department Facilities

  • Bioenergetics Laboratory

    This laboratory provides state-of-the-art infrastructure for the determination of the energetics of the interactions, and changes in physical properties of the components on forming the complexes. This is achieved using a variety of biophysical methods including calorimetry. Instruments include two MicroCal isothermal calorimeters and one Microcal differential scanning calorimeter.

  • Biophysical Spectroscopy Laboratory

    The biophysical spectroscopy laboratory has state-of-the-art optical spectroscopy instrumentation that is used for a variety of chemical and biochemical research projects. Many of these instruments include automated accessories with temperature control.

  • Mass Spectrometry Laboratory

    The Mass Spectrometry Laboratory employs one full-time supervisor to provide technical assistance, training, and maintenance of the mass spectroscopy instruments. The facility houses the following spectrometers:

    • Applied Biosystems/MSD Sciex 4000 Q-Trap - The Q-Trap 4000 is an LC/MS/MS system that offers state-of-the-art hybrid triple quadrupole/Linear Ion Trap sensitivity and ease-of-use, plus triple quad selectivity. This instrument can be interfaced to either a Shimadzu LC system with 96 well autosampler or a DART (Direct Analysis in Real Time) ion source.
    • Bruker Autoflex SPEED MALDI-TOF/TOF-MS - This instrument is designed and optimized for ease of use for both traditional MALDI applications, such as protein/peptide characterization, and polymer analysis, as well as high resolution MALDI tissue Imaging, glycan analysis, or high-throughput microbial identification.
  • Polymer Laboratory and Nanomaterials/Surface Characterization Facility

    Facilities available for conducting research on polymer materials include: Polymer Materials Synthesis; Polymer Molecular and Physical Characterization; and Ultrathin film Materials. The Nanomaterials/Surface Characterization Facility is available to UAB researchers, government users, users from other universities, and industrial customers. We provide nanomaterials/surface characterization services including consultation, data collection, and data processing. These state-of-the-art instruments allow for measurements in bulk and at the nanoscale in situ with temperature control.

    • Woollam M2000-U (J. A. Woollam Co., Inc.) multi-angle spectroscopic ellipsometer (240-1000 nm)
    • Zetasizer Nano (Nano ZS, Malvern) particle analyser
    • Waters GPC-HPLC Breeze 2 system with RI detector
    • Theta Lite Optical Tensiometer TL100 (Biolin Scientific)
    • A Bruker FT-IR spectrometer (Vertex 70)
  • Small Molecule NMR Facility

    The Small Molecule NMR facility provides complete NMR services including consultation, user training, sample preparation, data collection and processing, and data interpretation. The facility includes two Bruker 400 MHz NMR systems and a Bruker 300 MHz system.

  • X-Ray Crystallography Laboratory

    The Bruker AXS APEX II SmartBREEZE X-ray Diffractometer is used for determining structures of both small molecules as well as proteins and nucleic acids. This diffractometer is used both for research and training of postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and is actively used by our undergraduate majors as well.
