Medical/Clinical Psychology

The Psychology Ph.D. program with a concentration in Medical/Clinical Psychology is a collaborative effort of faculty in the Department of Psychology and throughout the UAB Health System. Along with the traditional domains of clinical psychology—psychopathology, psychotherapy, and assessment in children and adults—our program specializes in medically relevant areas such as health psychology and behavioral medicine, pediatric psychology, neuropsychology, rehabilitation, geropsychology, substance abuse, and health disparities. Academic courses, research, and clinical practice are sequentially organized and integrated, and all major program elements include training in understanding and addressing mental and physical health concerns across diverse groups.

Interdisciplinary Engagement and Opportunity

More than 70 research and clinical faculty are associated with our program. They represent a wide variety of interests and are located in academic departments and centers across the university and the UAB Medical Center, as well as in affiliated and community-based health care facilities. This large faculty collaborates to provide a wide range of didactic learning, research, and clinical training opportunities to our students in a research-focused and strongly interdisciplinary academic health care context.

Because academic courses, research, and clinical training are directed by faculty from the Department of Psychology as well as other UAB entities, the VA Medical Center, Children’s of Alabama Hospital, and the community, our students have access to a wide variety of potential role models for psychologists in a variety of research settings and health service roles.
