Colorguard, Majorettes, Blazerette

Here at UAB, all 3 units of auxiliaries are considered sections (like trombones, percussion, or clarinets) within the Marching Blazers. Auxiliary members are also eligible for scholarships: $500 first 2 years, then $650 their 3rd year, then $750 their 4th year. We reward loyalty. The first set of auditions are mid-April for the following fall.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a part of the UAB Marching Blazers! We are coming off another championship winning season as UAB Football won its second Conference USA Championship!! It is with great excitement and anticipation that we now shift our focus as we will move into a brand-new stadium (Protective Stadium) for the 2021 season!!! Marching into the brand-new stadium, and taking the field for performance, and of course cheering on our Blazers together alongside our fans, faculty and students, will be moments to remember for a lifetime... Auditions for all UAB Auxiliaries will take place on Saturday, April 24th (Guard & Dance), and Sunday, April 25th (Majorettes). All auditions will take place in the UAB Campus Rec which is located on campus along University Boulevard. All auditions are closed to the public. Only marching band directors/staff and the judges panel will be allowed. In addition, only tryout candidates will be allowed inside the Campus Rec on the day of the auditions.

  • Audition Process

    In addition to the successful completion of the eligibility and registration requirements, the Majorette audition process is comprised of 4 categories: Individual routine, Basic requirements, Across the floor movement & Group routine.

    Individual routine:

    This is your time to show the judges what you do best! The routine should showcase your ability to successfully execute a prepared routine. You will be judged not only on your twirling skills but also on your showmanship, body technique, professionalism, entertainment value, and physical fitness. Multiple baton work should be included in your routine, as well as dance twirl type steps. The choreography for your individual routine should demonstrate and showcase your twirling and performance strengths. Entertainment value is super important. The routine time limit is 2:30 minutes. NO props are allowed. It is important to choose music that is engaging and tasteful. Please note that music that is currently popular on the radio is not always the best choice. Music selections may have no profanity or questionable lyrics. Music for all individual routines must be submitted no later than Saturday, April 17th at 5:00pm.     Basic Requirements:

    • Vertical 2-turn catch left
    • Vertical 3-turn
    • Toss illusion
    • Toss cartwheel
    • Splits (both R & L)
    • 3-baton showers/juggles (must do at least 5 consecutively) These will be performed individually for the judging panel.

    Across the Floor Movement:

    All tryout candidates will learn an across the floor combination to perform for the judges. Movement and body carriage are integral parts of every performance, so it is important to evaluate these components at our tryouts. All candidates will be sent a video to learn the Across the Floor Movement sequence on Tuesday, April 20th. The sequence will include marching, jazz runs and other field movement techniques. Please note, this sequence will not be taught the day of auditions so all candidates should prepare accordingly.

    Group Routine:

    This routine will be taught the day of tryouts. This allows the judges to see how well an auditionee can adapt to learning routines quickly. This is also an opportunity to see how well those auditioning work and perform together. This routine will be performed in small groups determined the day of the tryout. During the time of learning and performing this routine, judges are looking for quality technique, an ability to move past a mistake in a timely manner, a positive attitude and the overall performance abilities of each tryout candidate.

  • Letter of Reccomendation

    All new prospective tryout candidates must submit a letter of recommendation. This letter should be provided by the Band Director, or Auxiliary Coordinator. In the event, and only in the event, that a candidate is not a member of their school’s marching band, a letter of recommendation may be given by their studio instructor.   • Attire

    A majorette uniform of choice should be worn for the audition. The uniform should fit properly. Tights with tan dance shoes should be worn. NO boots may be worn during auditions. Full performance hair and make-up is required. A shade of red lipstick that looks good on you should be worn. Remember, a first impression is very important. No jewelry other than a single set of earrings may be worn during the audition process.

    You will need to have a prepared individual routine no longer than 1 minute. It can be performed to the music of your choice, but please make sure that the music is tasteful and contains no profanity, or questionable lyrics. Your individual routine should ultimately showcase your skills as a dancer and performer and highlight what you do best.     • Leg Extension (side and front) into right splits
    • Six Step Turn Sequence (consists of a single, double, and triple pirouette)
    • Leap Combination (consists of Right Grand jeté and Leap in Second)

    All tryout candidates will learn an across the floor combination to perform for the judges. Movement and body carriage are integral parts of every performance, so it is important to evaluate these components at our tryouts.   • Attire

    Attire for tryouts will consist of a midriff dance top (color and style of your choice) and black dance shorts (style of your choice). Tan jazz shoes, as well as skin color tights should be worn. On the field, and for performances, the Blazerettes wear hair down and curly, with make-up fully done and red lipstick. Hair and make-up should be “Game day Ready” for auditions. No watches or other jewelry (other than one set of earrings) May be worn during auditions. Remember, first impressions are very important!

    Individual routine:

    This is your time to show the judges what you do best! The individual routine should showcase your ability to successfully execute a prepared routine. You will be judged not only on your guard skills, but also on your showmanship, body technique, professionalism, entertainment value, and physical fitness. The choreography for your individual routine should demonstrate and showcase your performance strengths. Entertainment value is super important. The routine time limit is 1:30-2:00 minutes. At least one minute of the routine must be on flag. You may choose to incorporate rifle in your routine if you so desire, as long as you fulfill the required flag portion of the routine. It is important to choose music that is engaging and tasteful. Music should not include profanity, or questionable lyrics.     All tryout candidates will learn an across the floor combination to perform for the judges. Movement and body carriage are integral parts of every performance, so it is important to evaluate these components at our tryouts. All candidates will be sent a video to learn the Across the Floor Movement sequence on Tuesday, April 20th. The sequence will include marching, jazz runs and other field movement techniques. Please note, this sequence will not be taught the day of auditions so all candidates should prepare accordingly. A flag will be provided to you for this portion of the audition.

    Group Routine:

    This routine will be taught the day of tryouts. This allows the judges to see how well an auditionee can adapt to learning routines quickly. This is also an opportunity to see how well those auditioning work and perform together. This routine will be performed in small groups determined the day of the tryout. During the time of learning and performing this routine, judges are looking for quality technique, an ability to move past a mistake in a timely manner, a positive attitude and the overall performance abilities of each tryout candidate. In addition, all guard candidates will learn a traditional pregame song the day of the tryout. A flag will be provided to you for this portion of the tryout.

  • Letter of Reccomendation

    All new prospective tryout candidates must submit a letter of recommendation. This letter should be provided by the Band Director, or Auxiliary Coordinator.
