The most visible moment lasts only a few seconds.
A student steps forward. They slip their arms into the white coat, shake hands with the faculty, sign The Dentist's Pledge, and return to their seat.
But the White Coat Ceremony is not the beginning of D.M.D. clinical education at the UAB School of Dentistry. It is a recognition of the preparation that made that moment possible.
By the time members of the Class of 2028 crossed the stage, they had already completed two years of rigorous study in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and the many other sciences that form the foundation of patient care. They had developed preclinical skills in simulation labs, worked alongside faculty mentors, and spent countless hours preparing for the responsibilities that accompany the practice of dentistry.
The preparation extends beyond science and technique.
Professionalism is part of the curriculum from the beginning, including ethics, service, accountability, communication, and respect for patients. These concepts are woven throughout the curriculum alongside the biological sciences and clinical skills that prepare students to enter the clinic.
While white coat ceremonies can occur at different points in dental education, UAB’s ceremony comes as students prepare to enter the clinical phase of the curriculum.
The ceremony also includes a commitment that extends beyond the white coat itself.
Following the recitation of The Dentist's Pledge, each student signs the document before leaving the stage. Written by longtime UAB faculty member Dr. Sidney B. Finn, the pledge addresses trust, integrity, lifelong learning, and service to others.
Across the Class of 2028, students speak 19 languages and bring experiences from undergraduate institutions and dental schools across the United States and around the world. Before arriving at UAB, they completed nearly 35,000 hours of community service and more than 35,000 hours of research experience.
The preparation began long ago. Patient care starts now.
