Kimberly R. Carr, D.M.D., M.A., has accepted the position of Co- Director of the UAB Sparks Dental Clinic. The announcement was made by Janice Jackson, D.M.D., chair of the UAB School of Dentistry’s Department of Pediatric Dentistry. The appointment is effective immediately due to Dr. Stephen Mitchell, the current Sparks Dental Clinic director, assuming the duties of director of the SOD International Dentistry Program.

Kim Carr. Part of an interdisciplinary UAB Civitan-Sparks Clinic team, the UAB Sparks Dental Clinic provides dental care tailored for individuals with special health needs and disabilities. Services include routine preventative care, fillings, and simple extractions.

“We are privileged to have Dr. Carr as our new co- director of Sparks Dental Clinic and congratulate her on this important leadership position,” said Jackson. “She will contribute to the continuing commitment of quality oral health care for our special care patients.”

Carr received her B.S. degree from UAB in 1991 and her D.M.D. from the UAB School of Dentistry in 1994. She furthered her education at the UAB, receiving certification in pediatric dentistry, as well as an M.S. degree in 1997. After completing her advanced education training, Carr served as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, teaching pediatric dentistry residents at the Children’s of Alabama Hospital (COA). In 2021, after 20 years in private practice, she accepted a position as full-time faculty in the department. Her full-time commitment has included teaching at the UAB Sparks Dental Clinic, the SOD Finn Pediatric Clinic, and the COA Hospital Dental Clinic.

She is an active School of Dentistry alumna who has served on the SOD Alumni Leadership Council and mentored Student National Dental Association members. Leadership is not new for her. She has held offices and committee positions at the local and state levels in several dental organizations and maintains membership at all three levels of the Alabama Dental Association (ALDA) and all three levels of the Alabama Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (ALAPD). She currently serves on the SOD Admissions Committee and recently completed two terms on the COA Hospital Peer Review Committee.
