Maria (Mia) L. Geisinger, D.D.S., M.S., has been appointed the first holder of the Kent and Phoebe Palcanis Endowed Professorship in Periodontology at the UAB School of Dentistry. The appointment was approved by The University of Alabama Board of Trustees.
The endowed professorship recognizes Kent and Phoebe Palcanis’ enduring commitment to patient care, education, research, and the advancement of the specialty. Geisinger was named the inaugural holder for her leadership in education, research, and service at UAB and nationally.
Geisinger has served on the UAB faculty since 2007, when she joined as an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Periodontology. She was appointed assistant professor in 2008, promoted to associate professor in 2014, and named professor in 2019. Her leadership roles have included predoctoral periodontal program director, director of periodontal clinical research, director of the advanced education program in periodontology, and she currently serves as the chair of the department.
Her national leadership includes service as past president of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and past president of the AAP Foundation. She has also served as chair of the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs and as a member of the ADA Science and Research Institute Board of Directors. Geisinger is an elected representative to the IADR/AADOCR Publications Committee, adding to her growing leadership profile within the profession.
Geisinger’s scholarly work includes an extensive record of peer reviewed publications, consensus reports, and invited presentations, supported by competitive funding from federal agencies and industry partners. Her research has contributed to advances in periodontal and implant therapies, oral-systemic health, regenerative approaches, and evidence based clinical care.
She is recognized for her commitment to education and mentorship, having guided doctoral candidates, postdoctoral fellows, and residents, and led curriculum initiatives within the Department of Periodontology.
“Phoebe and I established this professorship to support excellence in periodontal education, research, and patient care,” said Kent Palcanis, D.D.S., M.S., professor emeritus of periodontology. “Dr. Geisinger is an outstanding choice as the first holder, and we are proud to see her leadership and contributions recognized in this way.”
“This professorship represents a responsibility as much as an honor,” Geisinger said. “Kent and Phoebe Palcanis are deeply committed to rigorous science, mentorship, and service to patients and the profession. It is meaningful to advance that commitment at UAB.”
Dean Nico Geurs said the appointment reflects Geisinger’s impact on the school and her national standing in the field.
“Dr. Geisinger has strengthened UAB through her leadership, scholarship, and dedication to education,” Geurs said. “The endowed professorship supports that work and the shared commitment Kent and Phoebe Palcanis have shown to the school and the profession, and Dr. Geisinger brings those qualities to the role.”
