Among the school’s 20-plus student organizations and special interest groups, the new Digital Dentistry Club creates space to deepen hands-on learning, explore emerging technologies, and connect with experts shaping the future of oral health. From CAD/CAM systems and 3D printing to AI-driven diagnostics, the initiative reflects UAB’s commitment to innovation and positions students to lead in a rapidly evolving profession.

“Digital methods are becoming the standard in clinics around the country,” said Kamal Patel (Class of 2027), club founder and president. “This club is here to empower students for the future of dentistry so that we can stay ahead of the curve and graduate well prepared.”

While UAB dental students are already exposed to digital workflows in the classroom and clinic, the club offers additional opportunities for hands-on experience with advanced tools and software. Workshops led by faculty will guide students through scanning, milling, and design processes, while guest speakers and industry partners will share insights on real-world applications.

For Rush Patel, co-vice president, the club is about more than technology – it’s about readiness. “Dentistry is evolving, whether you like it or not,” he said. “This group will help us better understand the benefits and challenges of digital dentistry so we can make informed decisions and enter the job market with confidence.”

The club is planning an inaugural meeting to be held soon. Plans include speakers who will introduce the history and origins of digital dentistry, along with themed lecture series, vendor demonstrations, and conversations with private practitioners who are helping shape the field. Students will also explore how digital tools extend beyond the operatory into practice management, patient education, and marketing.

For Guy Best, a club member, the timing couldn’t be better. “We’re right on the cusp of where everything is evolving at such a fast rate,” Best said. “Same-day crowns and dentures will be right at our fingertips. Everything we learn here will translate to our clinical work and enrich our education.”
